Multiscale effects caused by the fracturing and fragmentation of rock blocks during rock mass movement: implications for rock avalanche propagation

Abstract. The fracturing and fragmentation of rock blocks are important phenomena that occur ubiquitously during the propagation avalanches. Here, movement a rectangular block characterized by different joint sets along an upper sloped lower horizontal plane is simulated using discrete element method (DEM) models. pattern set allows to break weak planes at onset fragmentation. With this design, sliding their influences on conversion transmission energy within system investigated. results show can significantly alter velocities kinetic energies fragments in system, accelerating front sub-block while decelerating rear sub-block. Such between sub-blocks attributed accumulation release elastic strain caused transfer induced more efficient than collision. Furthermore, positive relationships increase strength be reliably fitted with linear functions, indicating mass higher experiences more-energetic effects.
